Janet is right about the dogs being able to play frisbee...our Vet said to be cautious until they are a year old and then still nothing too "high" until they are 18months...she wants the bones good & strong.  Both our Aussies carried weighted backpacks for MONTHS, working up to about 10% of their weights.  This is something that also helped to "drain" some energy and work on building muscles.

When we started...neither one had ANY retrieving skills show up!  I read everything I could and bought a variety of frisbees.  Finally, one Aussie we have with a high prey drive would chase the frisbee rolling along the grass forever...but never jump for it.  The other one, finally started to jump ...over the past month they have both now learned to jump low, look over their shoulders and catch it on the run, and most important...BRING IT BACK!  It's the best exercise for them whether short tosses in the backyard, or long ones at a nearby field.

I've now bought frisbees in bulk!!  I got them from someone off Ebay for about $3/ea and the girls go thru about 1 per week. But well worth it! There is a more expensive one that he gave us to try and it's lasted for the whole month...so we will invest in some of those after we use up our supply!  (abt. $3/Dog Discuit Fastback and abt. $6/Euroblend  )

Our girls aren't interested in balls or even squeaky toys...but show them a frisbee and they're ready for a workout!  To see them rip across the field, it's hard to imagine how they could possibly run and look over their shoulders...but they do...granted they are Aussies...but they didn't start out very interested.   We've tried to snap photos but the camera blurs...but we do have them on video and it's a hoot to watch!   I play frisbee with them about 15min/daily ...more on the weekends...keep trying...it's great!

I have a 10 wk. old labrador retriever male puppy, who loves the frisbee. I started to socialize it with him, when he was 5 wks. old, and now, thats all he really loves to play with. He is still to small however, so he cant run and catch it all the time, but he will chase it till it falls to the ground.

A good way to get your dog to like and actually chase it, is just to get them socialized with it first. Once they will start taking the frisbee from your hands, and carry it off, then you can start throwing it very slowly, and if they chase it, then you've got yourself a dog that will enjoy trying to catch the frisbee. If not, put peanut butter around the rims of the frisbee.

And yes, peanut butter is the answer to EVERYTHING.

HA!

peanut butter is the answer for everything! its like crack for dogs...

I've never had a probem getting a dog to chase a frisbee, its the jumping and catching part that I've found to be tricky.
