My bf wants to try and train his bassett (Duke) to go hunting with him.  LOL he acutually thought Duke might just be a natural and took him along on his leash and couldn't get a shot in since Duke whined and cried the entire time and scared all the birds away (good job Duke!) and then he let out a shot before they left to see how Duke would handle it and it terrified the poor guy, he didn't like it at all.  But my bf really wants someone to go with him and I don't even like the fact he's trying to kill those poor birdies and it's cold and too early in the morning to boot so I definitely will not go to keep him company.  SO... anyone have tips on how to train a dog to be around hunters I guess and how to become a bird dog, Duke is an excellent retriever, much more so than my flat coat RETRIEVER/spaniel mix, she just chases the ball picks it up looks at you and drops it, she could care less.  Duke is awesome at retrieving tho... just very very disobedient... about 90% of the time.  =)  Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

My dad hunts with his Springer Spaniel every year,  Barley (the dog), has been doing this since he was a pup and is well used to the noise of a gun.

The best thing to do is take Duke along with dogs that are accustomed to the noise of gun fire if the other dogs aren't in a panic every time a gun goes off than neither will he be after a little while!

Unfortunatley all our gun dogs are taken hunting from pups and are mentored by older dogs, when they watch the older dogs they seem to pick it up alot easier. Is your dog from hunting stock? I think this makes a difference! Barley's mother was 8 times Field Champion.

Also you could buy a toy that looks like a bird, and get him to retrieve and praise him loads when he brings it back! This will make him think that getting the bird is a really good thing!

But be careful if he is at all possesive of his toys if you do take him hunting with other dogs, because if he is the rookie the others may try to take his bird! I know our dogs bully the newcomer a little bit! But soon enough there is another newcomer and it passes onto them!

Hope this is helpfull!

My bf said the papers just show the parents names and no history of them being hunting dogs, they might just be show dogs I'm not sure.  But thank you that does help a lot.  I'm sure this will give him some hope now.  =)

Found this, it may help with Gunshyness if you find it tricky to get a whole group of seasoned bird dogs together!

Although I think some of the methods are a little harsh! And I certainly don't agree with using an electric collar, I don't believe that punishment is a solution for any animal that is just scared!
