Unfortunately too many folks are quick to generalize when it comes to the issues at hand.
Although you mostly hear/read commentary about bad breeders there are many such stories about rescues and pet shops who are substandard also, I have experienced them many times and could write many stories about each.
I agree with the folks hear who say we must not
lump breeders into one catagory and rescues in another when it comes to being responsible guardians of our most cherished friends and loves.

Being a former breeder for 12 years, and being involved in dogs, rescue, SPCA, for many more, I have to agree. If I want to buy a purebred, then I want to buy from someone that cares as much about their breeding stock, health issues, etc. as I did. I want to know that all the appropriate testing has been conducted. If I am looking for a companion that doesn't have to be purebred, then the local shelter is my first stop. There are always many more dogs available then homes for them, unfortunately.

I kind of have to agree with Liz on this one, there is something weird about posting dogs for stud, like pimping your dog out! Also, I think that as previously mentioned a qulity breeder would go to their breed clubs, and try to hook up with an appropriate stud for their bitch. I feel that when one is willing to offer a stud to anyone who comes along for a fee, then it tends to imply that the people don't know that much about breeding. I mean what about all the health safe guards that a quality breeder gives, I'm not just talking about OFA cert. or anything like that but what about brucellosis, and other transmittable diseases?

I can understand everyone's points... they are all well made.
But I am hesitant to start censoring the forum and it's members.
So long as people aren't being rude or offensive or using improper language I prefer to let them post their thoughts and ideas regardless of if I agree with them or not.
Like any other community, pupforum has different people with different views and I prefer to let them all have a voice.
Feel free to disagree with anyone's post and let your own opinions be known and I think this will be a great forum.
If i start dis-allowing points of view I think that we will all be the worse off for it.

I absolutely agree with you on the censorship issue. If people want to post they should be able to, I don't think my comments were related to censuring as much as it was related to more of a "buyer be ware" type of approach. I mean people should read at least ONE book on breeding before they get involved! They might find out that it's not worth all the money in the world one day! On the other hand if you can handle it and do it right and do it well, I have had wonderful breeding experiences with people who have become like second family to me over the years. I have other friends who had one litter and went This is what breeding is about! NEVER again!!!! Way too much work. Pangaya.

I think that the most important thing when It comes to breeding is that the breeder knows there will be a home for the puppies afterwards! If you breed dogs I think it's your responsibility to make sure that you can properly and permanently home each and every one of them, and if there is any doubt in your minds then don't breed!
I know breeders who have waiting lists for puppies that are at least 4years long! They home visit each and prospective owner, and every puppy they have ever sold has had a home for life! I think this is a good example of breeding!!
Plus what will happen to some of the rarer breeds of dogs without a responsible breeding programme?!! Some breeds of dog could be lost forever!

There ain't no dog like the one I got!
