My 4 month old Welsh Springer Spaniel puppy FREAKS out whenever we leave him alone for more than 30 seconds.  In his crate, out of his crate, doesn't matter.

He is wonderful in every way, but he gets so upset the minute he thinks no one is around.  Lots of people in my house, so he is nearly always with someone, but I want him to be able to be alone for a couple hours without totally freaking out.  Any suggestions???

Puppy separation anxiety is a common problem. It is important that you not make a big fuss of your dog when you are leaving him alone or returning home. Making it a big deal when you leave will just increase your dog's anxiety. This article should help you http://training-dogs-information.com/puppy-separation-anxiety.php

What does the puppy do when he is alone? The puppy may be scared when it's left alone which is also called separation anxiety.

Well, dogs having anxiety issues might do some “crazy” things when there’s no one in the house. Some dogs might leave bite marks on furnitures, sofa, etc. to cope up with their anxiety. Others might extrete nasty things that’ll redecorate your house with a “unique” scent. See that your dog has plenty of toys to keep him busy when he's left alone. At nights try and settle him in with his favorite toy or a blanket to make him feel secure.
