I read with interested that someone thought Huskies are not good with small animals. Without additional comment on that statement I will say that we have trained 4 different Huskies that amongst other problems listed by the owner was chasing cats... It took only one or two days to modify that behavior to the use of the word "LEAVE IT" or just extinguishing the behaviour for the most part. I think this is mainly a management problems that was not properly addressed at the appropriate time. We proof the modification by putting the dog in a 4x4 kennel with 12 cats (higly supervised of course) in other words no dog I own is allowed to chase small animals especially cats...Hmmm except for that Rat Terrior that I owned, but at least the supervised "LEAVE IT" worked and who knows what would have happened if I were not around...

my lab mix still chases the cats a bit, but only playfully. the cats dont fear her and generally like her although she will get on their nerves once in awhile.
i believe that any dog can be led to overcome whichever stereotypes are applied to the breeds

Chris If only 30% of dog owners realized what you wrote is so true it would be wonderful. Unfortunately most folks excuse too many behaviors as a breed chacteristic. (THUS BREED SPECIFIC LAWS)

one of our columnists (Ev Bliss) lives in Canada and has been very active and working hard in fighting the breed specific laws there.
she may be doing one of her upcoming columns on the issue.
if anyone wants to get involved in fighting BSL you should contact Ev...you cn find her info in the Ask a Trainer section.
