Coughing is how humans clear lungs and throat of unwanted debris. But in dogs, coughing is not normal. Any cough that goes on for more than a day should be carefully considered. Dogs will cough in response to pollen or dust, and should be kept in another room while you houseclean, especially while you vacuum. Smoking is another irritant that dogs should not be exposed to. Dogs have been known to develop severe emphysema following exposure to cigarette smoke. It's possible that he has Kennel Cough or heart worms. Kennel Cough , if left untreated, can turn into pneumonia. It happened to my pup and she was being treated by a vet before pneumonia set in. I don't need to tell you what can happen if the cough is because heart worms.
