A new column has been published in the Pupforum Ask a Trainer section:

Can a Puppy Go Outside Before He Is Fully Vaccinated
I just adopted a pitbull/shepard puppy that is three months. I’m trying to potty train her at the moment and that can be frustrating. The other articles on housetraining are helping and they assure me that I’m on the correct path with my training her. The shelter told me not to let her out of the house until she’s six months of age and has had her three shots and her rabies shot, is this true?...

Post your comments on the column here.

I have what I think is a shepard/pitbull.  He will be 3 yrs old on Christmas.  He was very easy to train but I know that isn't always the case!!!  We began to sit him outside right after he had his 1st set of shots.  He was 61/2 wks old.  We would sit him in the grass and stand there with him & repeat the same words- "Pee pee outside"  Clever, right.  ha ha ha We also praised him like he cured cancer when he went outside.   Anyway, every half hour we would do this and then it went to 45 mins and so on.  He took to it right away and when the word "pee pee outside" were spoken, he would go to the door.  Don't get me wrong, he had accidents but we would just show him his inside pee spot & say "NO"  then put him outside and use those magic words and give him praise.  My boy lives for toys and praise so it worked for him.  I don't recommend putting any animal outside before shots.  If you have ever seen an animal deteriorate from Parvo you would understand.  We rescued a dog that had Parvo & we didn't know it.  Through the help of our Vet and some quick perception we saved her.  Don't take any chances with your precious baby!!!

Hi, I just send a mail to Jean in regards of the question. When I keep a pup then I have the Parvo injection first then other one later. I take the pups everywhere I go. Socialising is so important. However not to town, schools and parks. Will take it picking up, working tests and to friends houses. They have immunity from mother for a while too. Ofcourse if there is an outbreak of Parvo play safe!!

I breed my own dual purpose golden retriever - train them to the gun. Do working tests and field trails with them - help other people training. I also run a rehoming service and am a breed advisor.
