A new column has been published in the Pupforum Ask a Trainer section:
My Chihuahua is a Man Eater! I recently adopted a chihuahua from a rescue in Pennsylvania. So far I've noticed he is fearful of men to the point of aggression...
Post your comments on the column here.

Jean,
Don't listen to all that garbage. Your dog simply needs discipline. In other words, he's the pack leader and sets the rules in the house. You need to become the pack leader by setting rules and boundries for him. Watch the "Dog Whispher" on the National Geographic and you'll see what I'm saying. You can solve your dogs problems in minutes by understanding dog psychology and not some drawn out "good boy" technique.

Hi Pete,
Actually, it was me who wrote that column as advice for my client. It turns out that the "good boy" technique has worked very well for this dog. Don't knock it till you try it!

Hi Jean, in the first instance I have to say I tend to agree with Pete and would be looking at basic dog psychology. In addition though, without knowing too much more, I would also look at his diet, and take into account his background of rescue dog (potential anxieties etc). Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys but really I've got this one. This is a case of a very fearful dog. You can't punish or discipline fear, it's just not effective (or fair). This client reported success with her dog the very first time she used my advice.
The advice I gave is not so much training the dog, it's applying Classical Conditioning. Remember Pavlov's dogs? He rang a bell, gave them food. Rang a bell, gave them food. Eventually, the dogs got excited about the bell, even if there was no food around. To those dogs, bell = food. What I am going for here is for this Chihuahua to get conditioned to think men = food.
Discipline and training are very often the answer to behavior problems, but in this case, it's not!
