8 Month Old Dog Is Getting Into Everything

My 5 month old pup does too. Trash, clothes, you name it. I think he also has an identity crisis going on. I have a cat and the pup and the pup tries to do everything the cat does. Sleeps on the back of the couch, gets on the kitchen table, etc. He also has issues with being alone, or so I am guessing because I have to crate him every time I leave him home alone. Have huge holes torn out of my living room wall as a result of leaving him free when I am gone. Barks endlessly and disturbs the neighbors when I am gone too, but only if I do not put him in his crate before I leave. Housebreaking issues when he is left free too. Any hints, tips or general behavior correcting ideas would be helpful.
