Sneaky PomChiPoos and a New Shy Rescue [Edit]
11/2/2005

I have 8 dogs, 2 Pomeranians, 1 black Lab, 1 Dalmation, 2 ChiPomPoo mix, and 2 PomChiPoo mixes. They range in weight from 70 + to under 5 pounds. They range in age from 9 years to 5 months. They are all great dogs and know that I am ALPHA; except the 2 that are 5 months, the PomChiPoo's. They were born by emergency cesarian, and have been babied.

The problem is that the 2 pups, a male and female, are determined to do things their way. They refuse to completely housebreak, they are on a schedule and use the outside designated spot during the day, but in the mornings, I wake up to a cesspool. They have a pet door and know how to use it. I even thought they might be afraid of the dark, so I put a light out there. I know it isn't the older dogs, because we have closed them (the older ones) up in the bedrooms at night. Also, they want to "play" with inappropriate items. I take it away, and give them an appropriate "doggie toy". When I do that, they will go sulk for a while, and then truly sneak some thing else. I am serious! I have watched them sneak things. The female will watch me, when she thinks I am not looking, she will look at her brother and he will grab something. Any help you can give me with the night-time housebreaking problem and their sneaking abilities would be greatly appreciated. (tootiebarbara, Georgia)

Well after I finished rolling on the floor at your email, I stopped and thought how many times I have heard these kind of things from people who live with these Mini Monsters lol. It seems there brains do not work on the same wave lengths as normal sized dogs and I must tell you most of the stories I hear about them is centered around going potty in the house. If this is only happening at night I would do one of these two things -#1 I would remove all water &
food from them by 6 at night (they will not die of thirst during the night) or #2 I would crate them after taking them out side first to do their thing. I think they must have a very high threshold of endurance, because they seem to wait out their owners on so many behaviours, like this. Please keep in touch I really want to know more about the way these little ones" THINK". By the way I love the fact that you have just simply watched out of the corner of your eye and found the truth of who was doing what. Best of luck.

I adopted a 3yr old dog from the humane society a month ago. He is a male Akita/chow mix. He is very well behaved, but seems very shy. He sleeps a lot, but he does run around with toys once in awhile. The adoption place said he came there in really bad shape, but he seems like he had some kind of training. He comes when you call him he lies down when you say and he sits when you say sit. Would you think he needs any training? The shelter says he is Akita/chow mix, but I would like to know what you think by my description of him He weighs 68lbs he is red, pointed ears, black under face, purple tongue and curled, bushy tail witch he carries up over his back. Do you know what he is? (harley, Pennsylvania)

With out a picture he sounds all chow and if he is only 68lbs I do not know many Akitas that small. My son’s Akita is 170 lbs. Any how no matter what he is love him train him and enjoy having him in your family. Even though he sounds very mannerly, training is a wonderful way to bond, you can do this simply with many long walks and having him sit when you tell him and down when you tell him, from there you can add stay and the more you work with him the more he will come out of his shell. Have a great time with him and enjoy the journey. Fran Dog Gone It
