Several Questions About a Beagle Puppy [Edit]
9/2/2005

I have a 4-month old Beagle puppy. He always has is nose on the ground which I understand being he is a beagle, but he would leave the yard no matter what! I was wondering how I could train him to stay in the yard being we live on the farm and I hate always having him tied up. He always goes to the bathroom in the garage at night and we try everything to potty train him but it doesn't seem to work. I always want to train him to hunt pheasant and He doesn't receive the little dummy but he will sometimes retrieve other things and when we put the bird scent down and drag it he never sniffs he always goes and plays with other things. One other thing he likes to bite when you try to pet him, how do I make him stop with out hitting his nose? I just really need some help or tips to training him (tiffany, North Dakota)

Yep, always having his nose to the ground would be characteristic of a Beagle. Staying in the yard is often a hard one for a puppy to learn. Being tied up is no fun either. I would suggest investing in some fencing that would not need to be too strong or tall as
he is only a beagle. But it is very hard to control a wandering dog. The other idea is to only take him off the property in the car or on a lead but through the house. This way he is not too sure how to escape and as far as he is concerned the only way out is inside.

As for the potty training, it is probably cold outside. When they are about 6 months they can go all night without going to the toilet. In the meantime just keep practicing giving him a treat and saying good boy as he is going to the toilet outside not after he has done it.

Every time he bites you say "no" in a loud voice as and then give him something he can chew. He is just 4 months this is a very young age to expect everything to work out.

When training him to hunt pheasant, just give him time. He will get it. Some dogs just take longer than others to learn. Some dogs take up to a year to get the grip of it. Just keep up with what you are doing and good luck.
