My Skittish Pit Bull [Edit]
6/13/2006

I have a pit bull named Tyson. He is a very good mannered and very protective dog. He has a very wierd trait I have never seen in a dog that drives me nuts. He is extremely skittish.

The only way he will come in from outside is if you open the door and walk away from it. If you stand at the door waiting for him to enter he will sit and wait for you to walk away leaving the door open. Other things like the clothes dryer running (next to the door), moving around the patio furniture, or running the vacuum will make him scared to come in at all.

This is not just at home. Any other place he acts the same. It almost as if he is very comfortable outside and in but not entering. I am fairly experienced with dog training but have never encountered such a trait, especially in a Pit Bull. any advice would be greatly appreciated. (Tyson, Missouri )

Right off the top of my head, I'd say that the poor pup has been traumatized somehow 'At The Doorway'. Perhaps his tail was caught or he was kicked away from the door at one point - could be hundreds of probable reasons there.

I also would like to be absolutely clear on the definition of Pit Bull as the various bull breeds are sometimes handled and conditioned and trained differently de
pending on the circumstances. Is this a registered dog?? An American Pit Bull Terrier or perhaps an American Staffordshire Terrier??? Is it a mix breed with a type of bull breed in his make-up or perhaps an Unregistered APBT??

Knowing the age of the dog and some detailed background would also help me to better asses the dilemma as it is most difficult to help pet owners via the written word let alone without such details as to daily routine, lifestyle, ownership, etc., etc..

If my first 'guess' is right then the only thing that can be done is 'conditioning'. Small steps of coaxing, bribing with treats, being regular and consistent with the situation on a daily basis and lots of patience. It may take months and even years before you can get him to forget any bad happenings he may have had in the entry.

Is he skittish with other things in life, inside or out??? When company comes over or perhaps if children are playing too loud or when dishes are being done, etc.??? Have you encountered this problem with the weather at all - lightening storms, thunder, etc.??

I have very little to go on here to be able to advise you properly so I suggest you contact me privately to discuss it further.
