My husband and I have recently moved to a new home and our 1 yr old shiba Inu has decided to chew on every piece of wood he can find in the house. The stair rail, door trim and many other ideas that he knows is wrong. I feel like our little one should be crated but my husband is against this idea since he hasn't been in one for about 8 months. The only thing I can do is put is nose to the area and tell him no and bad dog. Is there some product I could use to put on wood that would make my dog not want to chew on it because it tastes bad? (dbabel1, Nebraska )
A few things come to mind with this type of chewing:
Your dog is looking for hard objects to chew. At that age when their molars seem to have another growth spurt is when you want to introduce fabulous hard chews like: Dental Dinosaurs, Galileo bones, new slightly tougher or bigger Kongs and raw marrow bones if you are comfortable with that.
I would plug in Comfort Zone in the area (my guess-close to the door) think of it like aromatherapy f
or your dog and it will last about a month, enough time for your dog to adjust to their new home hopefully.
If you choose to use a crate gradual re-acclimation would be better than tossing him in. That may make things worse! If you go to our web site, under puppy stuff you can get a MSWord doc about introducing the crate www.caninesbestbehavior.com
Putting his nose in won't work as I am sure you have figured out. In some cases it may teach the dog to go back to the wood, so maybe it's best skipped. You could lube up all the wooden surfaces with Bitter Lime gel (not the spray, it will just soak in), but with the amount of destruction you describe you would have a pretty greasy house! Instead: safe, comfortable introduction to his new home, realistic non anxiety producing management and time will all help him adjust.
Lastly, take him on walks in his new neighborhood, hopefully the natural curiosity of the Shiba will help him see this new novel place as something really great!
Hope that helps,
