Housetraining All Over Again [Edit]
11/28/2005

I have 2 dogs. Teddy is 2 and Tucker is 1-1/2 (Schipperkes). I am having some problems potty training them and retraining them not to pee in the house. I use to use pee pads and feel it is time for them to start going potty outside. We are having retraining issues as they still want to pee where the pee pads use to be located. This is what I've done so far:
  • cleaned the carpets (I'm aware there's no way to get the urine and smell out completely)
  • removed all pee pads
  • leave the door open as much as possible (have done this all the time)
  • no drinking water after we go to bed (I've always had a water bowl in the bathroom)
  • block access to upstairs when I'm downstairs
  • block access at my bedroom at night (they sleep with me at night).
  • take them outside to potty, just before bed (they haven't had any accidents in my bedroom at night).
  • I get u
p in the middle of the night and take them outside to go potty.
  • reprimand if I catch them going potty, nothing if I didn't catch them in the act.
  • praise, praise, praise, - good potty!
Do you have any other hints or tips that might help out with our retraining efforts?

Retraining a dog to defecate in a different location after using something like wee wee pads, newspaper, or puppy litter boxes can be quite trying. It is for this reason that I often recommend to my clients that they really think through the use of such products as they often work as an intermediary step that will rely upon you retraining them at a later date. Once my clients understand that it means retraining or in effect potty training twice they soon decide it is best to pick the final defecation spot and start training for it from day one as opposed to having to retrain the dog at a later date.
