Advise on how to get a 5 month old Doberman to play gently with a 9 month old Minnie Doxie. So far I keep the Dobie on a leash when they go outside to play and leave them loose in the house for a little while each day. The Doxie can go under the couch or chair if the Dobie gets too rough. I sometimes use a water bottle to squirt them on the butt if they get to running in the house or get too rough with each other. Any ideas would be a big help. Thank you very much for your time. (hovimom, Oklahoma)
I have these visions of the Dobie tossing the Doxie around like a toy. You are doing a good thing with the leash as long as you are following it up with a "soft "correction and the words "EASY" as your command word. This is one of those very rare times you will ever hear me say a Harness would be best for this because it gives you a handle to grab. The reason is that I do NOT want you making a harsh corrections on this 5 month olds neck for just playing.
But I have to tell you the mini Doxies I know are NOT ANGELS. They generally start a lot of the rough play, so you need to make sure you correct BOTH of them with a "EASY" command and put your hands on them to stop the rough housing. Remember that what looks rough to you is just play for these guys. So with a harness on the big one and use your hands for the little one just keep at them to stop it from getting out of hand.
The most important thing you need to watch for is the big one using its paws on the BACK of the Doxie to control or stop it. This is a big time NO NO so I would be a little harsher with my command for that. All in all you just seem to really be on the right track here and they are just young so much of this will get worked out. In most cases they work it out with no one really getting hurt, but of course I understand your concern. Take care and grab your camera, I bet there are some really good pictures of these two waiting to be snapped. Fran
