Black and Tan Coonhound Barks Too Much [Edit]
11/22/2006

I need to know more about coonhounds and how to exercise them. I took my Black and Tan out for a trail walk (all trees and park) -- he barked a high-pitched park the entire time. Where can I take him and let him have fun smelling and not get the bark? Is the bark normal? I was thinking about trying a area that doesn't have trees. Also, I need info on dominance... my basset hound is really getting dominated by the new coonhound -- I don’t think this is a problem but I don't want him to be dominating the people in the home. Thanks! (showe2, Minnesota)

The key to any successful dog human relationship is understanding what each breed was bred to do. A coonhound was bred to hunt, in order to do this it means HIGH energy, that means lots of exercise to keep this dog healthy and happy. The high pitched bark is to tell the rest of his pack he is on a scent, so this it NORMAL. I have a coyote hybrid and he lets out a howl bark type sound that scares the heck out of people and its just his blood tel
ling him tell the pack where you are and what your doing. It would be mean to take him where there are NO trees because this is fun for him; it’s entertainment to follow different scents so why stop him? Just get used to it and allow him his moments to be a dog, don't worry about what other people say to you because its not up to them its up to you and he is having fun.

Now DOMINANCE is a whole other ball game. There should only be one ALPHA in each house hold and that should be YOU. So as the alpha you should STOP him from bulling the other dog. You did not tell me what he is doing so its hard to give you an answer on just what to do, other than telling you to STOP it right now. Do NOT let this dog sleep on your bed, do Not allow this dog to pull you on a leash, always make him sit before you feed him. These are just a very few things that will show him you are the boss. You do not need to be cruel to be the boss but you do have to be certain in what you do. If I can help more just let me know. Take Care Fran
