Australian Shepard Is Aggressive Towards The Cat [Edit]
9/21/2006

We have a 13 week old Australian Shepard female. When we brought her home and inside the house, she spotted our cat and became very aggressive toward her. We seem to be unable to stop this action. We put her on her leash, tell her no in a loud voice, but she will not stop her aggressiveness, which of course scares the cat. How do I correct this situation? She is only half the size of the cat but seems to turn into a monster when confronted with this situation. (texastrooper, Texas)

Hello, wow I bet she is a beauty so lets get her to act as pretty as she looks. If you have put a leash on her to make a correction and not gotten the right reaction, then YOU did NOT make a strong enough correction.

What was the leash attached to? This is one of those RARE times I would use a harness (I do mean RARE I hate most times when a person has a harness on a dog
because it simply teaches they to PULL against the pressure) but here I DO NOT want to hurt this pup by using a choke since she is so intent. I would jerk that harness when she goes to attack with a very stern, "NO!" Grab her, (reel in the lead) and with both hands, just make it very plain I will NOT accept this.

Have you tried putting the cat in a crate to keep every body safe and the cat right where you want her? I would crate the cat and walk the pup back and forth and make a correction EVERY TIME she so much as gives the cat a dirty look. If you do this with enough power in your voice (not loudness) I can whisper a command and my dogs can tell by the tone if they have crossed a line. Anyhow, do this with a real purpose because the last thing you ever want is a dead cat or one eyed pup. Let me know how it goes I will be glad to help step by step. Fran
