Aussie Stay! [Edit]
8/24/2005

Dear Fran, I have a 2 year old Aussie. He learns very quickly, but I need to improve his "stay" command. He will become distracted by someone offering him treats, for example. Is there a way to get him to "stay" until I release him? (bwestheimer, California)

Dear B,I have a question? Is the some body trying to give him treats a friend trying to help you? If so lets rethink this-If its some one the dog knows as a Friend and then you come down on this dog with a correction for trusting this person-the real lesson you might be teaching is Don't Trust Humans or at least not this one (not a good thing).

Ok lets go with its some one trying to help you get your "STAY" in cement. Before you allow some one to use treats to get your dog to come, it might be a good time to train first the LEAVE IT command this is a good one for not allowing your dog to take treats from some ones hand or from the street or where ever.

First you get the dog on a leash and in control, let a great treat be placed on the ground (don't let the dog see this) and as you pass it and the dog goes for it, you say "Leave it" and make a correction if the dog goes for it, this is also go
od for any thing you DO NOT want that dog to touch or roll in. Then once you get the dog to understand this command.

Don't allow any one but your self to give him treats and the second a hand with a treat is offered repeat the correction with the "Leave It "command. I think it’s best you teach your dog to STAY by using sounds and other diversions such as kids on bikes riding by (working with you of course) or the dropping of a ice chest filed with rocks while the dog holds it command - another real good one and my personal favorite a dog running right past your dog - front side and back while your dog does not move or throwing a ball or toy right in front of the dog while the dog stays right where he should. Of course when he does this correctly he should be allowed from your hand to get a treat or play with the toy but only from your hand.

These are much better things than treats from a friend and they are also things that might just happen to you in the real world. Of course use many different people for this so he understands it not allowed to take treats from anyone but YOU. Let me know how this goes for you I love follow ups that tell me what’s going on. Take Care Fran Dog Gone It
