I rescued a pitt bull mix when she was 6 months old. We have had her for six months and have some nasty problems with her. Her problem is going to the bathroom in her cage. I have put her on good food, she is in a small cage, she has a regular feeding time and we bring her out on a regular schedule. I have brought her to the vet and I did not get much help there. She’ll be good for a while and then accidents again. Everything I read on house training says that dogs do not want to eliminate in their area. What could be wrong with her and what can I do? I cannot live with this dog this way please help! (JEN PERRY, Michigan)
I can sure understand how and why this is upsetting you but there is an answer. You talk about her regular feeding time-How soon after she eats is she put in her crate? It’s very rare that a dog at 1yr would poop in there, but lets figure this out! Here is how it works - a dog eats - its body processes the food keeps what it needs and sends the rest to the bowls to be eliminated so, what does she do after dinner? The answer here is to take her for a walk of 30 to 45 minutes each and every night before bed time this action forces the bowl to empty, most people think that just allowing the dog to go out side before bed will do the trick and some times that works but if you are having a problem such as what you are talking about WALKING is the answer. Or take her
to a dog park and let her run and run with other dogs that also will cause her to empty. Most people will say well I have a nice size yard so she gets plenty of exercise, WRONG IF YOU HIDE AND WATCH YOU WILL SEE THE DOG WILL CHECK IT OUT MAYBE FIND A CHEW AND THEN LAY OR SIT DOWN-A DOG WILL NOT EXERSISE ITS SELF IF LEFT ALONE! You speak of your crate being SMALL how small? A dog should be able to stand and turn around without effort and then lay out all the way so if your crate is not big enough for this, it is too small. Try this IT will work. Take Care Fran Dog Gone It
A Rescue Story Follow Up
Hi this is a follow up on Tucker, he stayed in my kennels and running my grounds for 17 months, he was healthy and happy but still not Home. A lady who got tired of seeing his picture in the paper called me and asked, "just what the heck is wrong with This Dog? I said his crime is age he is now almost 7 so all the younger dogs are going into homes while he waits. We talked for at least an hour. She made arrangements to come see him the next day and a bond was formed, off he went to another new life and this time it worked. This time he had a lifetime home and the woman adores him as he does her. Sometimes it’s just a matter of time and finding that one person who sees in that dog what you do, as a resucuer. So this story had a happy ending, so many do not. Take Care Fran Dog Gone It
