2 Year Old Adopted Chihuahua Won't Get Close [Edit]
4/25/2006

I just got a new dog and I need to some different things I can do to help this 2 year old Chihuahua trust and like me. I am asking this because she has nipped at me and she will not move from the end of the couch. I know she will have to adjust but I need to know how to help her along. She was not abused, but she lived with her old owners for those 2 years of her life. (nuttiebuddy13, West Virginia)

Time and food is the answer on this one. I would sit there and feed her every bite of food by hand. First I would just place it a few inches away from her (one piece at a time), the second she moved towards it I would PRAISE her very softly very gently, then move it slowly
closer to you. It will take some time but it’s the best way to go.

Sit as close to her as she is comfortable with just sweet talk to her. Understand her world has turned up side down and she is feeling SO alone. She also has no idea why she is there, so just take the time and it will work out. Also it’s important you do not make her the center of your world right now. Do all the things you normally do like clean house talk or what ever, just give her time she probably very much wants to be held right now but her fear won't let her.

If you THINK she is going to bite you she IS going to bite you. THINK positive and be strong but allow her to come to you. Best of luck. Dog Gone It Fran
